Ford Explorer MK1 & Jeep Cherokee

Ford Explorer, a rugged rig with some mighty fine wheels, rims, and chrome.

The Ford Explorer Mk1, built until 1994, and the Jeep Cherokee AMC, spanning from 1983 to 2001, along with the Beijing Jeep Cherokee produced until 2014, were among the last rugged-looking compact SUVs from the USA. The Jeep Cherokee had that iconic boxy design and made appearances in numerous American films. I even spotted one as a sort of ghostly car in a dealership once, tucked away in the back of the showroom.

The Ford Explorer from 1990 to 1994 starred in the first Jurassic Park movie and must be presumed to handle encounters with a hungry Stegosaurus and an amorous Triceratops quite well. The Explorer has also made its mark in many other films and TV series, albeit with more recent and less boxy models.

The Jeep Cherokee was produced by AMC Motors (American Motor Corporation). Interestingly, AMC Motors was on the verge of bankruptcy when the Cherokee was introduced, but they carried on as AMC Jeep under the AMC Jeep Alliance. This alliance was part of a collaboration with AMC Motors that started towards the end of AMC's existence as a car brand. The collaborations included the AMC Renault Alliance, AMC Chrysler/AMC Jeep Alliance, and AMC Eagle Cars. Eventually, the partnership came to an end, and the production of cars under the AMC name transitioned to Chrysler Eagle towards the end.

Jeep Cherokee was also manufactured in China until 2014 under the name BAW Jeep. Beijing Jeep operated until 2005.

(The Galloper version of the Pajero was produced with an 80s design all the way until 1997. You can import this from overseas, and it can be decked out with a winch, wide tires, and lights in the grille.) Toyota Hiace MK5 and MK6

Y'see them Toyotas in them first two snaps? Well, they were the last of their breed to roll off the lots in the West. Production came to a screechin' halt 'cause of that Japan nuclear plant mishap. Them rides were a hit in places like Finland, the British Isles, Sweden, and Norway. And Norway was the final stop on the European tour before the curtain dropped on this model. "Now, them Toyota Hiace Mk5 and Mk6, well, they're just plain cool for gettin' sideways. You can whip 'em 'round with either four-wheel or rear-wheel drive. And if you're feelin' fancy, you can spruce 'em up with some '80s chrome tail fins, tinted windows, extra lights, and a dangly wünderbaum. Pivco City Bee, Think City, Buddy Electric and Kewet Buddy!

Well, shoot, these cars might've been the ones I oughta kicked off this blog with, considerin' we're talkin' about Norwegian rides and brands cooked up right here in Norway. First laid eyes on a Pivco City Bee back in '95 at Hunderfossen, but reckon the first time was on that Newton kids' show on NRK back in the early '90s. Our own Morten Harket, bless his heart, supposedly snagged himself one of them cars, maybe just to breeze through them toll booths for free? Either way, it turned into a solid PR stunt for them two Norwegian brands, Harket and Pivco City Bee. Pivco City Bee supposedly hit the scene in the early '90s. By '94, the first proper prototypes were supposedly ready, just in time for the Lillehammer Olympics.
