Opel Omega mk1 1986-1993, Opel Kadett, Opel Kadett gsi 1989-1993



One of my old teachers used to drive a 1991 Opel Kadett. I always thought his car looked downright ugly and boring as hell. I even thought it was way older than 6 years at the time, back around 1997, when I found out its actual age. The real issue might’ve been the teacher himself—he was a grumpy, strict, and angry fella who’d get mad in a heartbeat if things weren’t just right. So, it’s possible it’s my old, boring teacher’s fault that I associate that car with dullness.

A few years later, around 1999, I saw an Opel Kadett GSI Cabriolet at the dealership where my folks bought a new car. That thing stayed parked there for at least half a decade before it disappeared from the used car section at Citroën.

Another female teacher I had around the same time, who was super nice, bought herself an even older Opel Kadett that had been traded in for a bunch of parts worth 15,000 kroner more than what she paid for it!

The same model as that teacher's Opel Kadett ended up slamming into my dad’s Mazda, head-on!

This happened when me and my brother were heading to the theater with my mom, and we were in a big rush. One of my parents' crazy neighbors, who always drove like a maniac on our road, came flying around a blind curve on the narrow gravel road and smashed straight into the front of the Mazda, even though my mom slammed the brakes and was totally ready for it. Yep, that was the first and only time in my life I got to experience a head-on collision, and I’m mighty glad I haven’t had to go through it again.

The Opel Kadett GSI was a real favorite with car thieves well into the 2000s, and it's definitely a whole different beast compared to the late 70s Opel Rekord.

My cousin and her family drove an Opel Omega MK1 in the late 90s. Right around the time she scrapped that car, about the year 2000, I got to know a guy who lived over in Vålerenga and was a big Vålerenga fan. He also drove an Opel Omega, but this was a 1987 model.

I’m a Vålerenga fan myself, so we got along just fine.

Worth mentioning, the Opel Omega MK1 was sold as the Vauxhall Carlton MK3 over in the UK and as the Chevrolet Suprema in Brazil. The Brazilian Chevrolet Suprema was on sale there until around 1997-1998. You could also find some real badass versions like the Lotus Omega 3000 and the Lotus Carlton/Opel Omega 3000.

Well, shoot, these cars might've been the ones I oughta kicked off this blog with, considerin' we're talkin' about Norwegian rides and brands cooked up right here in Norway. First laid eyes on a Pivco City Bee back in '95 at Hunderfossen, but reckon the first time was on that Newton kids' show on NRK back in the early '90s. Our own Morten Harket, bless his heart, supposedly snagged himself one of them cars, maybe just to breeze through them toll booths for free? Either way, it turned into a solid PR stunt for them two Norwegian brands, Harket and Pivco City Bee. Pivco City Bee supposedly hit the scene in the early '90s. By '94, the first proper prototypes were supposedly ready, just in time for the Lillehammer Olympics. Toyota Hiace MK5 and MK6

Y'see them Toyotas in them first two snaps? Well, they were the last of their breed to roll off the lots in the West. Production came to a screechin' halt 'cause of that Japan nuclear plant mishap. Them rides were a hit in places like Finland, the British Isles, Sweden, and Norway. And Norway was the final stop on the European tour before the curtain dropped on this model. "Now, them Toyota Hiace Mk5 and Mk6, well, they're just plain cool for gettin' sideways. You can whip 'em 'round with either four-wheel or rear-wheel drive. And if you're feelin' fancy, you can spruce 'em up with some '80s chrome tail fins, tinted windows, extra lights, and a dangly wünderbaum. The other Hiace you see there, well, it kept on truckin' till 'round 2018-2019, albeit abroad." Trabant 1957-1991!

Trabant is a car that rolled out of Germany's factories until '91. Now, you could pimp this ride with a surfboard or a picnic basket on the roof, or just straight-up style it and drop in a mean Audi engine. Trabant, mind you, was mostly churned out in the '60s and '70s, a far cry from the days of today's fancy environmental buzz, but hey, they did have a recyclable cotton body. Volkswagen scooped up Trabant around '90. Right after, the assembly line came to a halt, but nowadays, it's Volkswagen holding the rights. I reckon they've flirted with the idea of kickin' the production back into gear every now and then. By the way, Trabant made a cameo in a TV show called 'The Mystery of the Living Corpse' that aired on norwegian  channel named NRK. Back when I was a kid, I was more into Trabant than the mystery, I tell ya!"
